Oh yeah… it’s that time of the year again. Time for a road trip… no mom or dad to tell ya to do your homework… no little brothers or sisters to bother you… just you, God, and your friends! It’s time to get away for a retreat! What a great opportunity to study God’s Word, get training, and of course, experience the social benefits!

So you’re gettin-outta-town. (Or at least going somewhere away from your messy room!) Tremendous excitement and challenges are generated as you get away from the usual routine and take time to focus on God. It’s hard to avoid “catching” the contagious enthusiasm at retreats. You and your friends return pumped up and ready to allow God to work in and through you.

What can we expect God to do through opportunities like this? Well, let me name a few! In 1 Corinthians 3:9, the Bible says, “For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, God’s building. According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another is building upon it.” You can expect that the foundation you have laid in someone’s life will be built upon. Also, as you grow in the knowledge of Christ, you will develop your faith and reach out to your friends more effectively (Philemon 1:6). As you study and are taught, you will grow in your ability to accurately handle God’s Word, and you know how important that is in today’s society!

Sounds like fun, doesn’t it? And not only is it fun, but it’s food for the soul, too. If you’ve ever been on a road trip with a bunch of friends who want to grow closer to God, you probably have some awesome memories, new friends and hilarious stories of pranks that you still laugh about. One retreat or conference can be as valuable in a person’s life as a whole semester of Bible studies, so you can see why it would be worth it to put a little effort into trying to get your friends there!
