Tips For Leading Group Prayer

Have a Plan Come with a specific plan of how to lead the group in prayer.?? Pray about how to lead the time of prayer and come with a minute-by-minute plan.

Give Direction Make it very clear what you are asking everyone to pray toward.? Explain it clearly and pray the first prayer so that you model the direction you are asking them to pray toward.

Change the Focus Change the direction of your prayers several times.? Break the prayer time up into smaller segments with a new direction for prayer in each segment.

Change Group Dynamics Change the group size and the posture of the group often.? When you change the focus of prayer also change the group dynamic and posture (stand, sit, hold hands, on knees, etc.).

Keep it Simple Encourage people to pray short prayers, even telling them how to word the start of their prayers.? Make it easy for everyone in the group to pray out loud.

Use Scripture Let the Bible be your guide.? Uses verses in the Bible to give direction to your prayers.

Use Songs Break up sections of prayer with worship songs that fit the direction of your prayers.? Songs are just prayers to a music, incorporate these type of prayers too.

Listen to the Holy Spirit Be prepared to break with your plan if the Holy Spirit is telling you to do so.? This is often most evident when people begin praying in a new direction without your leading.

Teach People How to Pray Remember that the best way to learn to pray is to pray in groups, so teach people how to pray as you are leading the group.? Incorporate all types of prayer into your prayer time (confession, thanksgiving, worship, intercession, etc.).
